SYNOPSIS

Jess Longold, the WA’s best magical investigator, and her assistant Henry are ordered to Arry’s reclusive lair to solve the mystery of his impossible murder. There, they find his desecrated body at the center of an unknown ritual with seven burning candles… and one unlit one.

Using her keen detective skills, innate sense of Truth, and the magic of her Tarot cards, Jess begins to untangle the story of what happened… But in doing so, she inadvertently causes the ritual’s eighth candle to light. The convolution and chaos grow ever more dire as the ritual activates, and begins killing off Jess’s suspects one by one, all the while funneling power that would make a nuke look tame.

Can Jess solve the mystery, avoid death by runaway ritual, and stop most of Southern California from turning into a smoking crater?

A Twist of History

Magic entered the world in 1965, melting a large chunk of Antarctica and forming the Hell Forge and Angel Wall. The world governments agreed to keep the magic part a secret, but more disasters followed the initial twenty-foot rise in ocean levels, including the destruction of Florida and Cuba, as well as most of Columbia.

For those in the know, the Cold War was actually the Prophet War, with near world destruction. The World Authority (WA), who’s nominal mission is to mitigate weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), was actually set up to control and regulate those who are Magically Imbued (aka MI).

The world is now much as it is today, but with hidden magic. There are rumors, though…

Types of MI's

  • Arcimages—almost godlike, five total, all dead now (taking Florida & Cuba with them)
  • Polymages—Very powerful, able to control multiple magics (only a couple dozen)
  • MI –Able to use one type of magic with levels from one (weakest) to five (strongest)

Half of all MI are Ritualists. They are versatile but their magic is slow and difficult. Jess Longold is a Truth Teller, while Prophets, the rarest and most valued of all, are immediately conscripted into WA service.
